OSH CAYGILL SIGNS SURPRISE DEAL FOR FINAL TWO BRITISH TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS OF 2018

• Yorkshire’s Josh Caygill joins British Touring Car Championship • Caygill signs for AMD with Autoaid/RCIB Insurance Racing squad • Blancpain class winner to pilot MG6 GT at Silverstone and Brands • Holmfirth driver ‘blown away’ to debut in UK’s top car racing series

International racing driver Josh Caygill is to make a surprise late-season switch from the Blancpain Sprint Cup to the ultra-competitive Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, beginning with the penultimate event of the 2018 campaign at Silverstone National Circuit this coming weekend. The 29-year-old, from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire, has signed a deal with West Thurrock-based AMD with Autoaid/RCIB Insurance Racing for the BTCC races at Silverstone this Sunday, 16th September, and during the season finale at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit on 29th/30th September where he will drive an MG6 GT. Realising a long-held dream of competing in the UK’s premier motor racing championship, and relishing the prospect of competing on home soil once again after five years of action mostly on the European mainland, Caygill simply cannot wait for his BTCC debut a few days from now. “I’m blown away I’m going to be racing in the BTCC at Silverstone and Brands, it’s a proper dream come true and I can’t wait to get out there in the MG”, said the ex-motorcycle racer, “I’ve enjoyed racing the Bentley this year in Blancpain Sprint, but this opportunity to move into touring cars is one we couldn’t miss. “It’s an exciting new venture and, importantly, one which is a major plus for my amazing sponsors who are all UK-based. This deal with AMD wouldn’t have been possible without them, so a huge thank you to everyone and especially SMUK and LSS Waste. I’m under no illusions, the BTCC is mega competitive and there will be a lot to learn. I’m ready though, and focused on doing the best job.” After a successful career on two wheels in motocross and then circuit motorcycling, including the high-profile British Superstock 600 Championship and British Supersport Championship, Caygill made the switch to four wheels in 2013 in the Volkswagen Racing Cup after some major injuries dictated retirement from bike sport. Remaining in one-make ‘tin top’ action for the next three seasons, he graduated onto the European stage in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup – while dovetailing a second season in the UK series – and continued in the replacement Audi Sport TT Cup in 2015 and 2016, becoming a podium finisher. In 2017, Caygill switched disciplines after signing with Belgian Audi Club Team WRT to race in the prestigious Blancpain Endurance Cup and he also made two additional appearances in the Audi Sport TT Cup. This year, Caygill made a sideways move into the Blancpain Sprint Cup with Team Parker Racing where he and ex-BTCC racer Aron Taylor-Smith became Silver Cup race winners with Bentley. Now, after agreeing his two-event deal with Shaun Hollamby’s AMD squad for the BTCC, Caygill will form part of the biggest and most high-profile championship in British motor racing which benefits from a huge following and media presence. With tens of thousands of spectators attending each BTCC event during the course of a season, the championship also enjoys extensive coverage on ITV4 with live raceday broadcasts and highlights packages. Additionally, the racing is also streamed online across the globe. Caygill’s first competitive experience of his MG6 BTCC car will come during the opening free practice session at Silverstone on Saturday, 15th September, at 09.25, with the second session following at 12.05 ahead of qualifying at 15.15. On Sunday, 16th September, race one of the weekend will commence at 12.10, race two will begin at 14.40 and race three will conclude the track action at 17.20. All three BTCC encounters will be screened live on ITV4 and streamed live online at www.itv.com/btcc
