CONFIDENT CAYGILL LOOKING TO END MAIDEN BLANCPAIN ENDURANCE SEASON STRONGLY IN BARCELONA FINALE

Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya is the destination for Netherton racer Josh Caygill this coming weekend, 30th September/1st October, when the final round of the Blancpain Endurance Cup brings the curtain down on his maiden campaign in the discipline.

Having adapted well to the demands of the globe’s biggest and best GT endurance championship throughout 2017, the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT driver is determined to challenge for a season best result in the three-hour race on Sunday – and hopes are high going into the event.

Round five of Blancpain comes mere days after the Yorkshire racer made a highly successful return to sprint racing in the Audi Sport TT Cup at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, and the confidence gained there should stand him in good stead when he takes to the track in Barcelona.

Posting a best finish of fifth position in the second of the two TT Cup encounters, secured after delivering some impressively thought-out and very well executed overtaking moves during the final couple of laps, Caygill says the boost that has given him should work in his favour this weekend.

“Obviously, Blancpain and the TT Cup are different styles of racing and very different in terms of the tactics, the team-mate aspect and pit-stops, but it’s still racing at the end of the day and I definitely feel a confidence boost after the Red Bull Ring last weekend”, commented the SMUK and LSS Waste supported driver.

“It’s going to be interesting getting back into the bigger Audi this weekend, I’m really looking forward to it and it’d be fantastic to end the year with our best result of the season. There’s a lot that can happen in a three-hour race, hopefully we can put together a competitive run and be there at the end with a strong result.”

After graduating from the aforementioned Audi Sport TT Cup at the end of last year, Caygill leapt into the ultra-competitive Blancpain Endurance Cup and started out the season with a top 15 finish in the Pro class alongside team-mates Jon Venter and Niki Mayr-Melnhof.

Round two visited Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit, the first time Caygill had raced on home soil in three years, and despite a tough qualifying session for the team they almost broke into the Pro top 20 in the race. Then, in the six-hour third round at Paul Ricard in France, the entry switched to Pro-Am with Hugo De Sadeleer standing in for Mayr-Melnhof and the No.3 Audi finished ninth in class.

Another career first then followed at the end of July with Caygill making his maiden appearance in the world-renowned Total 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium. Producing a strong showing as part of an expanded four driver line-up, featuring experienced Briton Richard Lyons, a likely points finish was frustratingly ended by mid-race contact.

With a lengthy break of two months since the 24 Hour spectacular, 28-year-old Caygill is hungry to get back behind the wheel in the Blancpain Endurance Cup and is very much looking forward to competing at the Circuit de Catalunya for the first time.

“It’s always great going to a new track and Barcelona is obviously one of the top circuits in Europe, so I can’t wait to get started”, he added, “I’m not setting any targets, only to do the best I can for me and the team and hopefully finish the season the best way we can.”

Following the Bronze test on Friday, 29th September, Free Practice and Pre-Qualifying will follow on Saturday, 30th September. Final Qualifying precedes the big race on Sunday, 1st October, with the three-hour contest scheduled to begin at 14.00 (UK time).
