• World Circuit Marco Simoncelli next stop for UK's Josh Caygill
• Italian venue to host round three of Blancpain Sprint Cup
• Caygill and Aron Taylor-Smith aim to build on first class win
Popular Italian race track World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the resumption of the 2018 Blancpain Sprint Cup season next weekend, 23rd/24th June, where British driver Josh Caygill aims to continue the strong momentum which delivered a first Silver Cup victory last time out.
During the previous event on ‘home’ soil at Brands Hatch six weeks ago, Holmfirth-based Caygill and team-mate Aron Taylor-Smith secured their maiden silverware of the campaign with a win in the first of two races at the Kent venue in the No.31 Bentley Continental GT3.
Realistically, Caygill and Taylor-Smith could certainly have added a second podium in as many races in the subsequent encounter but the Irishman was caught-up in opening lap chaos not of his making at the exit of the second corner – resulting in a frustrating retirement due to damage.
Nonetheless, with the breakthrough class victory still very much fresh in the minds of the duo in their first season together, the pairing head to Misano determined to build on the competitive Brands Hatch showing.
“Brands was a mega weekend for us, to get our first win on only my second weekend in the Sprint Cup was a massive boost”, said Yorkshireman Caygill, who is backed by SMUK and LSS Waste, “The guys in the team did a fantastic job with the car, Aron was great in his stint, and we were all gutted with how race two turned out as I really do believe we had the chance for another podium at least.
“The whole weekend was a big step forward from the first round at Zolder, from a personal point of view I made good progress through the sessions and found a lot of time from the first practice into the races. The aim is to obviously try and keep the momentum going into Misano next weekend, it’s a new track for me but hopefully we’ll be up to speed pretty quickly.”
For the third event of the season, which will feature two 60-minute races as usual, the Silver Cup category has a couple of additional entries heading to Italy meaning the ultra-competitive class will be even more keenly fought between the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-AMG and, of course, the sole Bentley Continental of Caygill and Taylor-Smith.
Ahead of the Misano weekend, the Team Parker drivers are equal fourth in the Silver Cup championship standings on 30 points, just five points shy of second place and a further 10 points adrift of the class leading Mercedes-AMG pairing of Nico Bastian and Jack Manchester.
Following two free practice sessions at the Italian track next Friday, 22nd June, qualifying will take place at 13.50 (local time) on Saturday, 23rd June, with the first race scheduled to begin at 19.40 (local time) that evening. On Sunday, 24th June, race two will get underway at 14.00 (local time).
Both encounters will be streamed live online HERE.
